Jala Neti

Jala Neti is an important aspect of Yoga Sadhana. I would say from my personal experience that this practice brings immediate change in perception. If you were in a negative or bad state the previous day, and the same state is still carried to the next day, you don’t know exactly how to come out of that state, just do Jala Neti in the morning after brushing your teeth and see the change. A positive state of mind will be experienced and in that changed state of mind, it has a maximum possibility that you will find a way to learn lesson from past experiences, and move forward in the right direction. The positive experience or right decision comes because the practice of Jala Neti awakens one of the important psychic center, called Ajna Chakra, the center of wisdom.

One of my friends who I used to give personal Yoga sessions, had once given another dimension of Jala-Neti. After practicing Jala Neti, he said- “Sir, I feel Jala Neti is one of the best methods to remove hang over of previous night’s party.” 🙂 What he experienced was the Freshness after Jala-Neti.

These are the major benefits of Jala Neti:-

Mucus and pollution:-Removes mucus and pollution from the nasal passages and sinuses, allowing air to flow without obstruction.

Respiratory tract diseases:-It helps prevent and manage respiratory tract diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and pulmonary tuberculosis.

ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Specialist:-To relieve allergies, colds and sinusitis, tonsillitis together with various disorders of the ears, nose and throat.

Muscular tension:-Relieves muscular tension of the face.

Brain:-Cooling and soothing influence on the brain and is beneficial in the treatment of epilepsy and migraine.

Psychological aspects:-Alleviates anxiety, anger and depression, removes drowsiness.

Freshness:-Makes the head feel light and fresh.

Balance in hemisphere:-A balance is brought about between the right and left nostrils and the corresponding left and right hemisphere, inducing a state of harmony and balance throughout the body and the systems governing circulation and digestion.

Perception:-Perception improves, allowing for a better relationship with the world and with ourselves.

Hormonal balance: – Neti has positive impact on pituitary gland, which is called the master gland, thus helpful practice in bringing balance in the hormonal system.

Ajna Chakra:-According to Yogi Swatmarama, perfection of Neti leads to Divya Drishti. Neti is said to stimulate Ajna Chakra.

Overall Health: – Jala Neti stimulates the various nerve endings in the nose, improving the activities of the brain and the overall health of the individual.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chapter 2 (verse 77)

If through Raja Yoga, you can control the mind, Prana is automatically suspended, but this is difficult, particularly in the beginning. It is not easy for anyone to control, unify or isolate the mind from the sense experiences and ego. Therefore, through Hatha Yoga we try another approach – first control the prana, so that suspension of the mind takes place. This whole process is the beauty of Bihar Yoga/Satyananda Yoga which is also called Integral Yoga. It starts with the practice of Asanas, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha and then moves towards Relaxation and Meditation. Experiencing the state of meditation is purpose of Yoga.
