Yoga Nidra and Negativity

Hari Om

We are now on the verge of entering a new year. Since childhood, I think, many of us, fix a goal or take a resolution for New Year in order to experience happiness and fulfilment in our life. With this perspective, I am sharing a satsang of Swami Satyananda Saraswati which may help us.

Yoga Nidra and Negativity

Negative thoughts are nothing unnatural to the mind. In fact, when negative thoughts come to you, it is a very positive sign. Where do negative thoughts come from? They come from within you. This means that in your consciousness, there is some negative stuff. If you feel like vomiting sometimes, what does it mean? It only means that there is fermented acidity within your system. Should it come out or should it not? From a health point of view, I would say that it should. Toxins should be eliminated whether they are in the body, mind or emotions. images (2)

Therefore, during the practice of Yoga Nidra, if negative thoughts come, don’t let them disturb you. Give them a free passage. If you allow them free expression, at first your Yoga Nidra practice may not appear to be successful, but after some time, the negative thoughts and all turbulence will automatically cease and tranquillity will prevail.

The greatest tragedy of man is that he doesn’t know how to deal with his negative thoughts. In fact, the mistake is with religions. They have not dealt with man’s problem in a scientific manner. Instead, they have said, ‘Don’t think like that. Don’t do this. Don’t agree with that.’ This is dictatorial ordinance. Man and the society cannot be rectified by dictatorship; there must be a very systematic and scientific approach.

If in your country there are 40,000 criminals and you spot them out and kill them all, do you think that would eliminate criminality? No, criminality is an ever growing process. Likewise, negativity is also an ever growing process. Therefore, you have to develop understanding and a very positive attitude.

Who think negative thoughts? And who makes a sankalpa (resolution)? The same mind, the same you. One minute you make a positive sankalpa, then your mind thinks something negative and you try to eliminate that thought. So you are fighting with yourself; you are creating animosity between yourself and yourself. This means you are causing a split in your personality. There should be no friction or conflict, and there should not be any animosity or dissension in your personality. There must be harmony. If you have two sons and one is a good boy and the other is bad, what do you do? You love both. You feel both and you consider both as your children. You don’t shoot the bad boy. So, like this the mind has two vrittis.

Now, in his Raja Yoga sutras, Pantanjali says the vrittis of the mind should be controlled. How can you do this? By having a break system, just like you have in a car. You don’t use the break all the time. It is only necessary when the car is about to collide. Likewise, you must check your thoughts when they are going to create an accident in life. Often the thoughts are merely fantasies or imaginations. They are called innocent negative thoughts. Now, why do you fight with these innocent and harmless thoughts? If your car is travelling smoothly and there is no red light and there is no chance of collision, why do you apply the break? If you keep using the break indiscriminately when you’re travelling at a fast speed, you’re bound to overturn car one day.

Therefore, in Yoga Nidra, or in any spiritual practice, or even in your day to day life, you have to discriminate between the harmless negative thoughts and the potentially dangerous thoughts. If the thoughts are harmless, let them come, because you are only eliminating your emotional toxins and unburdening the subconscious mind. Even if you don’t want to do it, nature will enforce it. The process of dream is a natural means of elimination. If our dreams were suppressed we would go mad. Dreams are very important and healthy channels for elimination and expression of the subconscious. And so are fantasies.

Do you know what fantasy is? It is the mind in dreams. You are able to fly and you visit the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. You become a multimillionaire or billionaire, a president or prime minister, an eminent ballerina or Miss Universe. Such fantasies are very important for the growth of human mind, and they should not be checked, even during meditation. You must remember this point. You might get fed up with your thoughts and fantasies and say, ‘I can’t meditate. Every time I try, my mind flies.’ However, all the wise men have said that fantasy is very important for the growth of human consciousness.

Now, there are negative fantasies like killing someone, committing a sexual assault, cheating or stealing, taking revenge on someone or trying to kill oneself. Such thoughts come to everybody some time or other. Sometimes they come gradually and steadily, and at other time they come suddenly. In some people they come early in life, whereas in others they come with maturity. If you supress them, they will come during middle age. Often, people over the age of 45 have a sudden explosion of these negative thoughts.

However, I have come to a conclusion about negative thoughts. It is best not to interfere with nature’s process. Completely forget what religions have said. If you are practising Yoga Nidra and suddenly there is an upsurge of negative thoughts, don’t be disturbed. Continue, day after day, week after week and month after month. Surely they will come to an end, and finally you will succeed in your practice.

Spreading Dimesions & Awareness of Yoga

As the time is passing, I am observing that Yoga in Jehangir Hospital, Pune is becoming more relevant. New aspects and dimensions are appearing in which I see that in those situations Yoga has an appropriate answer.

I am starting a series of blogs to share my experiences in Hospital with In-Patients & Staff while taking their Yoga sessions. Through these shares, people will images94CB4AC7become aware of many aspects and dimensions where Yoga is playing a revolutionary role. Recently, I went to take Relaxation session on 6th floor in Hospital, when I noticed a patient walking here and there in the corridor. I recognised him as an Inpatient because of his uniform. I felt him anxious. I went to him, introduced myself and insisted him to do the relaxation session. He said- “I can do the relaxation practice but have to go at 2 PM for Angioplasty”.

He came in his room and we started the Yoga session. As I sensed his physical state, we started the practice with Abdominal Breathing in lying position. Abdominal breathing is a very effective practice which calms down the para sympathetic nervous system. After few minutes of Abdominal breathing, Yoga session gently shifted in Yoga Nidra, a practice of relaxation.

After 10 to 15 minutes of Yogic practices, when that gentleman opened his eyes, he was a different person. He was now very relaxed and calm. When I ask, how he felt after relaxation,  He said – “Before Yoga session, I was worried due to Angioplasty which was scheduled at 2 PM. I was waiting anxiously for 2 PM. But now I am relaxed. I am not worrying about anything rather I have left everything in the hands of God.”

While listening to his compliments, I saw a very genuine smile on his face.

Demonetisation – From A Citizen’s Perspective

Since 8th November 2016, after the announcement of demonetisation decision by the Government – conflicts, debate, discussion and arguments are taking place all over the country. Till now, 2 groups are seen dominantly in all the sectors, be on political ground, media, newspaper, society or even in the families. One group is in favour of the decision and other group is opposing. Slowly, our opinions are becoming stiffer and restricted because of arguments and ego clashes. Consciously or unconsciously, we are identifying more with either pro-BJP or anti-BJP. BUT among all this, one point is missing in a very genuine form and i.e. “Our Country”.

We are so busy and indulged to prove our opinion right and victorious that we are not realizing how much our country is suffering in this conflict. There is no work happening in the Parliament, Media is being divided in two groups and broadcasting the news. Even conflicts are coming in the families if they are divided in the opinion poll of demonetization. On the other side, a handful of people are trying to take advantage of this situation by diverting the currency.

Recently, I saw a movie “Sully”. It’s a nice movie based on a true incident in which the birds attacked and destroyed both the engines of the plane soon after taking off the flight. With the experience, the pilot took the decision for an emergency landing on the river when he saw that it is necessary to do in order to save 158 passengers and eventually he saved all the passengers. But after that, enquiry and investigation started against the pilot by Insurance and the flight companies. In the final investigation meeting, simulators were used with almost the same panic situation and found that the safest way to take an emergency landing was on river otherwise it could have been very fatal.

Almost same situation has come in front of us. Now it is useless and irrelevant to debate and go for the blame game. The time has passed. The arrow is shot. Demonetization decision is taken.

If we feel that we are sincere citizens and want the progress of our country then now is the time to think what will happen if the Government reversed back the decision of demonetization due to any pressure or protest!

Will this reversal process help the country?

For some time, lets imagine, all the opposition parties come on one platform and support the decision with the wisdom that if it is reversed, it will destabilize the country’s economy very badly, so from here, lets support the decision only for the sake of nation and make it success. We will catch the Government on some other ground. 🙂

What will happen if all the parties supports the decision!!!

If the Government, media, and the opposition party appeal to make this decision success, can it change the mentality and attitude of people who are in the queue!

I know, it’s not possible. Not possible at all! Because it is the impossible for the mass ego to change the thinking. This kind of change is possible only by working on our individual ego.

That’s why now the decision to support or oppose has come in the hands of each and every citizen and individual. If we find that this decision is useless and not going to help the nation at all in a long run than all the media, political parties and ourselves should think what could be the alternative if the decision is reversed back!

In this scenario, now we should not talk only on the negative side but we should discuss on other options that if this step is not successful then what could be the solutions and alternative to save the economy of our country. We should also apply a parameter to check our state that if this step is not successful, will I be happy because the Government has failed or will I be worried because the country’s economy will suffer!

But if we feel that this decision is not completely useless and irrelevant and it is not merely taken for political gain but it is taken with the confidence of Reserve Bank of India to strengthen the economy in long run and will serve its purpose in order to weaken the activities of terrorism, to throw out fake currency out of the system, make the banks more strong to be able to lend the money etc. If we find that even with some difficulties and practical problem this decision can be implemented, to help the nation, then certainly we should support and give a chance to this step.
